ALBACORES RETURN TO GOVERNOR'S CUP

Regatta Report

After an absence of several years, three Albacores attended the annual Governor's Cup Regatta hosted by the Ware River Yacht Club in Gloucester, Virginia. The Albacore class was won by Lars Rathjen and Janice Stapulonis with 3-firsts and a second. They certainly deserved the win after coming from way behind (and I mean way behind) in a very challenging light air race on Sunday. The final race was cancelled due to insufficient wind. Also in attendance were Richard Lawson/Suzanne Lucas and Rolf and Susan Zeisler. Saturday's conditions to the contrary were a delight with moderate breezes and flat conditions. With occasional hiking needed it was perfect for strategic racing as opposed to the athletic events we are sometimes faced with. We are also pleased to report excellent camping conditions on the grounds. The club offered a delicious breakfast and lunch which was well received. Saturday evening we met for dinner at the River's Inn Crab Deck at the York River Yacht Club. Several pitchers of Pete's and lots of great seafood were enjoyed before calling it a night.

This regatta may be the most picturesque of all of our local events and the river was almost completely devoid of motor boat traffic. The resulting flat conditions and excellent courses made for sailing that was above par. I think this regatta would serve as an excellent introduction for those who may have less experience with the open water courses. Overall the committee work was superb and I hope more Albacores will consider joining us next year.
