CAMBRIDGE ONE-DESIGN REGATTARegatta Report A total of thirteen Albacores raced in the Eighty-Seventh Annual One Design Regatta on the Choptank River in Cambridge, Maryland July 12-13). Among the other classes of boats present for the 2-day event were El Toros, E-Scows, Hamptons, Hobies, Lasers, Penguins and Snipes. It was great to see so many boats of all-different designs and colors. The EScows were particularly fun to watch; I felt almost like I was watching America's Cup live. To keep the event somewhat manageable, two separate courses were set up (smaller classes, larger classes). The Albacore sailed on the outer course with the big boats! Three races were sailed on Saturday, followed by two on Sunday. Notable events included a reasonable amount of wind both days, and Jasper Craig demonstrating a new racing technique - jumping off the boat at the starting line about 90 seconds before the gun. He and Becky claim the mainsheet was wrapped around the rudder, but we know it was pure strategy. They won the regatta! A lot of post-race swimming also took place, including one actual skinny-dipping by an unidentified gentleman. On Saturday evening, Albacore fleet members deployed themselves at various restaurants to sample the local fare, then joined the band and party at the clubhouse. Race results for all five races are posted below.
