SCUBA
CYLINDERS
Two Styles:
Scuba cylinders come in two main styles: Aluminum or Steel
Steel Cylinders are much
more negatively buoyant and are often used by technical
divers. They are much more expensive then the Aluminum
Cylinders.
 |
Aluminum
is by far the most popular. It is far less
expensive. In addition the vast majority of Dive
Resorts use Aluminum Cylinders. By using local
cylinders that are similar to what you use on vacation you
master the characteristics of the cylinder and have far
fewer adjustment problems.
Steel
Cylinders are much more negatively buoyant and are often
used by technical divers. They are much more expensive
then the Aluminum Cylinders.
The most
common size Aluminum Cylinders are 80 cubic Feet or 63 cubic
feet.

Steel
Cylinders are much more negatively buoyant and are often
used by technical divers. They are also much more
expensive then the Aluminum Cylinders. These cylinders
are often used by technical divers.
VALVES:
 |
K
Valve
The K Valve is the most common
valve found on Aluminum Cylinders. It is a
simple on - off valve. It
attaches to regulators that have a yoke style fitting. |
 |
 |
Convertible K
Valve:
A newer type of K Valve the Convertible K
Valve is becoming very popular. This valve has an
insert that can be removed as shown above. With the
insert installed the valve fits yoke style regulators.
With the insert removed the valve will adapt to DIN style
regulators.
|
PONY BOTTLES:
Pony Bottles are smaller cylinders (6 cf,
13 cf, 30 cf) that are used as a redundant air source in the
case of running out of air. These smaller cylinders
are carried in addition to the main cylinder and have a
separate regulator. |
