FINS
Two Styles:
Scuba fins come in two basic styles; full footed, which are worn barefooted, and
open heeled, which are worn with neoprene boots. Divers in this area and even
divers in warm waters, such as the Caribbean, prefer open heeled fins. Using
fins while wearing boots is safer and more comfortable.
Blade
Types: A vented fin, like the Velocity by Aeris,
is one of the newest and most popular designs. The vents minimize the effort on
the upstroke. A large semi-flexible blade maximizes propulsion. Quick adjust
heel straps allow easy adjustability.
A
flexible solid blade fin, like the the Plana Avanti X3 the Avanti
Quattro by Mares, delivers power on both the down stroke and the
upstroke. The flexibility of the fin allows long periods of use without tiring.
Quick release straps eases entering and exiting the fins.
Recently, split fins have been developed.
These fins offer increased ease of kicking. A new breakthrough in design
includes a split fin with a flexible membrane to offer both the ease of
kicking of a split fin and the increased propulsion of a full bladed fin..
The Volo by Mares and the Kinesis and Kinesis EX by Sherwood guarantees
30% more efficiency than traditional fins and also offers greater turning
ability than a spit fin.
