The Maryland Brittany Club Field Trial

Our field trial was held on October 13, 14 and 15 at Clear Springs. For the Open All Age on Friday, the weather was a hold-over from our long, hot summer and the dogs, especially, were feeling the effects of it. Nevertheless, we saw some exciting ground races and bird work with judges Charlie Cain and Gene Stewart choosing Linvel's Apple Jack for the #1 spot. Jack was handled by John Kline for owner Lowell Starner. Saturday morning greeted us with rain but chairman, Art Cohen, along with Lou Palazzolo and Frank Morrisey had the birds out bright and early. The rain stopped and dogs and humans enjoyed an overcast, warm day. The Amateur Gun Dog was won by Locar's Cross Ruffing for proud owner/handler Part Carney from Massachusetts. She was awarded the new Richard B. Morrisey rotating trophy. This trophy is a tribute to Dick Morrisey who has been instrumental in keeping the Maryland Brittany Club thriving for many years. He still shows up at the trials along with his wife Myrtle and we appreciate his continued support.

In the Open All Age, the Blue went to Linvel's Blazin Jake handled by John Kline for Ken Cherry. Puppy was won by John Kline's Playboy Dan. Kathy Morrisey prepared a delicious barbecue dinner for Saturday evening and just as we were about to eat, a tremendous wind and rain storm blew through! Everyone was in good spirits and we managed to save the food! Sunday was a perfect fall day with cool wind and sunny skies. Bob Gakenheimer and Sherry Steward watched 17 young derbies and awarded first place to Ken Cherry's Summer Storm. Gene Stewart and Charlie Cain gave the blue ribbon to Bill Bovich's Mudlie Mike in the Open Gun Dog.

After the derby, we gathered our young handlers together for the popular Junior Handler Event. With Joleen Stewart judging, assisted by Art Cohen, the awards were as follows: In the very youngest group, Michelle Palazzolo was First Place. The next young set was so good that both girls were awarded First Place - Allison Cherry and Rachel Palazzolo. In the middle age group, Tommy Morrisey was first and Casey Cherry was a very close second. The oldest group saw Erin Morrisey in First place and Melissa Palazzolo in Second. All the junior handlers went at it with determination and enthusiasm! I'm not sure if the kids or the adults had more fun on this stake!

We hope you'll all be back for the Spring Trial. May I suggest that those of you who have never attended a filed trial give it a try and come and see what is happening at the Spring Trial. You might find that you really enjoy it! At the moment, we are in the process of firming up with AKC a change in our date for Spring. We should have final confirmation by the first week of January that our date will be March 30 and 31 this year.Beth Wintermute-Field Trial Secretary
